(Old Course - Paper) NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course / NEW ONLINE BASIC PISTOL COURSE:
(OLD COURSE) This course takes 8 hours to complete. 4 Hours classroom, and 4 Hours at the Gun Range. With in the classroom, the student will learn the firearm safety procedures, different types of pistols, types of ammunition, how a firearm works, nomenclature (parts) of firearm, and the basics of pistol shooting. The NRA is a Nationally Recognized Organization and has Certified Firearm Instructors to provide the course to students who wish to have 8 hours of experience (which is what most states will recognize before applying for other licenses). Whether new to firearms and seeking experience, or taking the class to gain experienced hours per state request.
Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination, and course completion certificate
NEW ONLINE BASIC PISTOL COURSE: ($140.00)
The NRA Basic Pistol Course is a blended training course, which means a portion of the course (Phase I) is conducted in an eLearning environment (online), that can be completed on your own time. Upon successfully completing the online exam, students will be required to register for the instructor-led training portion (Phase II), which is to be conducted at your local range with an NRA Certified Instructor. You must successfully complete Phase I and Phase II in order to receive your Basic Pistol certificate.

Registration & PaymentThis payment is for Phase I only. Phase I is the eLearning portion.
The price of Phase I (eLearning portion) is $60.00 and payment is accepted via credit card. After the credit transaction is approved you will be automatically registered in this course and you can begin taking the course immediately. This course is non-refundable.
Maryland Handgun Qualification Course : ($140.00)
The Firearm’s Safety Training Course, for the Handgun Qualification License, shall consist of a minimum of four (4) hours of instruction and affirms the applicant’s safe operation of the firearm which requires firing at least one round of ammunition. Qualified Handgun Instructors, interested in providing
training for either the H.Q.L. or Maryland State Police Handgun Wear and Carry Permit, should begin to prepare a course syllabus that satisfies the basic requirements. Firearm’s Safety Training Courses for the Handgun Qualification License must include instruction on: Overview of Maryland State Firearm Laws, what constitutes as a regulated Firearm, How to purchase, Home Firearm Safety and Storage.
Unless otherwise exempt, as of October 1, 2013, a Maryland resident must possess a valid Handgun Qualification License before he/she may purchase, rent, or receive a handgun. Details on exemptions may be found below. You do not need a Handgun Qualification License to own a gun you already have. The Handgun Qualification License is only needed for purchasing, transferring, or renting a regulated firearm after October 1, 2013.
Maryland Wear & Carry Course : ($150.00)
After completing the HQL Course and Wear & Carry briefing then go to Maryland State Police website and follow steps /click
Wear and Carry Permits may be issued to any adult (18 years of age or over) who meets the following criteria:
- Has not been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor for which a sentence of imprisonment for more than one year has been imposed; or convicted of a criminal offense for which you could have been sentenced to more than 2 years incarceration.
- Has not been convicted of a crime involving the possession, use, or distribution of a controlled dangerous substance;
- Is not presently an alcoholic, addict, or habitual user of a controlled dangerous substance unless under legitimate medical direction;
- Based on an investigation, has not exhibited a propensity for violence or instability that may reasonably render the person’s possession of a handgun a danger to the person or others;
- Has a good and substantial reason to wear, carry, or transport a handgun, such as finding that the permit is necessary as a reasonable precaution against danger.
- As of October 1, 2013, has successfully completed the Maryland State Police approved firearms training course within 2 year prior to submitting the original or renewal application.
- Owner or employee of a business. You must submit photocopies of the Trader's, Business or Narcotics License or Articles of Incorporation to support Business ownership or as an authorized employee. You must also submit photocopies of six random deposit slips or deposits within a year for the business or a letter from the bank attesting that you have a business account. If you are an employee, you must submit a letter from your employer on the business letter head, verifying your employment and detailing the requirement or desire from the owner that you be armed.
- Correctional Officers. Must submit verification of employment and documentation of threats and/or assaults (ie., police reports, facility incident reports, and intelligence reports).
- Active, Former, and Retired Maryland Law Enforcement Officers and retired or former federal law enforcement officers, who permanently reside in Maryland and who were assigned in Maryland during their employment- as long as the application is submitted within one year from the date the officer either retired in good standing or separated in good standing and/or the officer has a valid LEOSA permit/certification/identification, the Handgun Permit Unit may accept that the applicant has a good and substantial reason to wear, carry, or transport a handgun as a reasonable precaution against the apprehended danger originating from his/her law enforcement position. For retired or former federal law enforcement officers and retired or former out-of -state law enforcement officers, who permanently reside in Maryland but were not assigned in Maryland during their employment, LEOSA is a nationally recognized credential and a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit is not required or necessary. The Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) may serve as the certifying agency for LEOSA if eligible and the application and guidelines can be found on the MPCTC website at mdle.net Should you desire a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit you will be required to provide a good and substantial reason to wear, carry, or transport a handgun as a reasonable precaution against apprehended danger.
- Private Detective/Security Guard/Special Police/Armored Car Guards. All applicants (unless exempt from training) who are employed as Private Detectives, Security Guards, Special Police Officers and Armored Car Guards must submit firearms qualification score sheet obtained from a Maryland State Police Certified Handgun Instructor on the State Police form. A letter from the employing agency which verifies employment and position, the ownership of the weapon, and location where the weapon will be stored when off duty is also required. - Personal Protection. There must be documented evidence of recent threats, robberies, and/or assaults, supported by official police reports or notarized statements from witnesses
